Message to new president of Argentina Javier Millay that the UK is not prepared to negotiate its sovereignty on the Falkland Islandsgave from their soil to the South Atlantic Ocean by David Cameron.
The British foreign secretary became the first member of the country’s government to visit the islands since 2016, as a stop before his trip to Paraguay and then Brazil for the G20.
From the capital Stanley, Lord Cameron said: “As long as the Falkland Islands want to be part of the UK family they are absolutely welcome to be part of that family. And we will support them and support them and help protect them and defend them, as far as I’m concerned, for as long as they want. And I hope that will be true for a very long time, probably forever.”
President Millay has said that the issue of the islands, which Argentina calls the “Malvinas”, is a diplomatic dispute that will be discussed in time, speaking of a Hong Kong-style agreement with the transfer of sovereignty of the islands from London to Buenos Aires.
The two countries went to war over the islands in 1982, while in 2013 residents voted 99.8% in a referendum to remain under the British Crown as a British Overseas Possession.
