China’s diplomacy today expressed its “great disappointment” over the US decision to veto a draft Security Council resolution drafted by Algeria on Tuesday calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. of China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Zhang Jun, according to China’s official Xinhua news agency.

“China expresses its great disappointment and dissatisfaction with the US veto,” Mr Zhang was quoted as saying by the agency.

The American veto “sends the wrong message, it makes the situation in Gaza even more dangerous”, he continued, estimating that Washington’s opposition to declaring a cease-fire is “nothing different than a green light for the continuation of the slaughter”, it is “a license to Israel to kill.”

The draft decision prepared by Algiers received 13 votes. Britain was absent. The US exercised its right of veto, preventing its approval.
