Trump’s blunder naturally went viral while his staff, to cover it up, later stated that probably referring to Mercedes Schlapp, wife of the president of the American Conservative Association (CPAC organizer) and former White House official Matt Schlapp, which he mentioned later in his speech.

According to Forbes, after Trump’s speech, the real Mercedes (Schlapp) called the reports about the Trump gaffe “Fake News at its finest.”

In a statement sent to Forbes, Trump’s staff said that “the crazy leftists at X continue to suffer from Trump Disorder Syndrome and that’s why they lie about everything.”

They then clarified that what everyone heard was not what they thought. In fact, they translated the clip in question as follows:

While introducing her: “My wife, our great First Lady – people love her.”

The crowd applauds and within seconds Trump continues: “People love her, oh look at that, wow! Mercedes (meaning Schlapp), that’s really good!”
