Sweden’s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is now a standard issue – Hungary was the last country to “sign”
The Hungarian parliament ratified the protocol today for Sweden’s accession to NATO.
Now all members of the Alliance have given the green light and the Nordic country is ready to join NATO.
The ratification of the protocol in Hungarian Parliament was approved by an overwhelming majority (188 votes out of a total of 199 MPs), ending almost two years of waiting.
“Today is a historic day,” said Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson, shortly after Hungary ratified the protocol for the Nordic country’s accession to NATO.
We are ready to assume our responsibilities within NATO, Christerson said.
The ratification of the protocol in the Hungarian Parliament was approved today by an overwhelming majority (188 votes out of a total of 199 deputies), ending almost two years of waiting.
Now all the members of the North Atlantic Alliance have given the green light and the Nordic country is ready to join NATO.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg today welcomed the Hungarian parliament’s ratification of Sweden’s accession to the Alliance.
“Now that all Allies have given their approval, Sweden will become NATO’s 32nd Ally. Sweden’s entry will make us all stronger and safer,” Stoltenberg said in a post on X.
Hungary has so far been the last of NATO’s 31 members not to approve Sweden’s membership.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak hailed a “historic day” for NATO after the Hungarian parliament today gave the green light for Sweden to join, the latest step in the Nordic country’s membership of the North Atlantic Alliance.
“We look forward to welcoming you to NATO very soon,” Sunak said in a post on X.
For his part, French President Emmanuel Macron, at the start of a conference at the Elysee in support of Ukraine, congratulated Sweden on today’s development. “Congratulations to your country,” Macron said, saying he was happy that Sweden and Finland “joined our organization.”
