“We counted at least 50 martyrs and more than 120 wounded, including women and children, after the occupation forces fired at thousands of civilians,” according to the head of emergency services at al-Shifa hospital
A hospital in the Gaza Strip spoke today, Thursday at least 50 dead from Israeli fire on Palestinians who rushed to the aid trucks in the northern part of the famine-threatened enclave.
“We counted at least 50 witnesses and over 120 injured, including women and children, after occupation forces fired on thousands of civilians” who were rushing “to aid trucks in Gaza City,” said Amjad Aliwa, head of emergency services at al-Sifa hospital.
According to the Hamas Health Ministry, at least 70 people were killed and 280 wounded in this Israeli fire. And eyewitnesses who spoke to AFP described scenes of thousands of people rushing towards aid trucks arriving at the “al-Nabulsi roundabout”, in the western part of Gaza City, the main city in the northern part of the enclave.
The Israeli army contacted by AFP did not immediately comment on this information.
Gaza Health Ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Kudra said that medical teams are unable to handle the volume of casualties and the seriousness of their condition as dozens of injured arrive at al-Sifa hospital.
Gaza’s Kamal Antoine Hospital received the bodies of 10 dead as well as dozens of wounded Palestinians from western Gaza City, hospital chief Hussam Abu Safiyya told Reuters today. “We don’t know how many are in other hospitals,” he added.
Hamas warned in a statement that the incident could lead to the collapse of talks aimed at a ceasefire agreement and the release of hostages.
The UN estimates that 2.2 million people, the vast majority of the population in Gaza, are at risk of starvation, mainly in the north where destruction, hostilities and looting make it almost impossible to deliver humanitarian aid.
According to the UN agency for Palestine refugees (Unrwa), about 2,300 trucks of humanitarian aid entered the Gaza Strip in February, a decrease of about 50 percent from January, with an average of 82 trucks per day. According to the UN, around 500 trucks were entering the Gaza Strip every day before the start of the war, when the needs of the local population were less.
