Israel: Abolishes the “green pass” completely – It relaxes the measures

by

The Israel abolishes from today the “green pass” for entering some public places, relaxing and other the restrictions it had imposed as there is a reduction in the number of new cases of covid-19.

The peak of the epidemic wave due to the highly contagious variant strain Omicron of the coronavirus came around the end of January in Israel, with the number of daily cases reaching a record 85,000. Since then the infections have decreased and yesterday about 21,000 were recorded.

“The tide has been broken,” Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said at the start of a conversation with health officials about the pandemic, adding that the green pass on those vaccinated against covid-19, who had recovered or had a negative diagnostic test.

The rules for the green pass had already been relaxed on February 4. Since then this health pass was only necessary for entry to nightclubs and event centers.

During the previous wave of covid-19, Israel adopted the “We live with covid” policy. In this way the country’s economy continued to function and schools remained open. However, some problems were observed in various sectors of the economy due to the large number of employees, students and teachers who were absent due to coronavirus or were forced into quarantine due to contact with a case.

Bennett pointed out that parents will still be required to test their children twice a week, while showing a negative diagnostic test is still mandatory for visiting nursing homes.

Although Omicron caused proportionately fewer serious cases and deaths than previous executives, the huge number of infections alone brought the country’s health system to its limits, affecting the quality of care.

Israel, a country of 9.4 million people, has recorded 3.5 million cases of covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic and more than 9,700 deaths.

Some scientists estimate that up to half of the country’s population has been infected by Omicron.
