Hungarian President Tamás Suliók signed the protocol for Sweden’s accession to NATO today, his office announced.
The country’s parliament approved Sweden’s accession to NATO on February 26paving the way for a historic step by the Nordic country, which observed neutrality during the two World Wars and the Cold War.
Stockholm abandoned its policy of neutrality to seek security in NATO after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
With the approval of the accession by Hungary, the process was completed. Preceded the visit of Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson to Budapest, during which the two countries signed a defense agreement.
The speaker of the parliament signed the ratification of the protocol last week and forwarded it for approval to the country’s president’s office. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has been under pressure from his NATO allies to seal Sweden’s membership soon.
In a first reaction, Sweden’s Defense Minister Pal Jonsson described the approval of the protocol by the Hungarian president as a “very positive development”.
