Presidential elections will be held in Venezuela on July 28, the head of the National Electoral Council (CNE) Elvis Amoroso announced yesterday Tuesday.

President Nicolas Maduro is expected to seek re-election for a third term, but it is not clear who his opponent will be. The Supreme Court has stripped opposition leader Maria Corina Machado of the right to run for president, prompting a backlash from the US which has reinstated sanctions against Venezuela.

It is worth noting that July 28 is the birthday of the late Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez (Maduro’s predecessor and mentor), who died in 2013.

The government and opposition agreed in October that elections would be held in the second half of 2024 in the presence of international observers and that each side would be allowed to choose its candidate. Opposition figures had expressed doubts that Maduro would honor the deal, fears that appear to have been confirmed by the Supreme Court’s ruling on Machado’s candidacy.
