THE former Chief of the General Staff of the Army of Ukraine, general Valery Zaluznywill undertake ambassador to the United Kingdom, a key ally of Kiev in its war against Russiaannounced today the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The president (Volodymyr Zelensky) has approved the candidacy of Valery Zaluzny,” and Ukraine’s foreign ministry has sent a request to the British side to agree, the statement said.

Zaluzny, considered a national hero for coordinating Ukraine’s defense effort during the Russian invasion, was replaced in February by ground army chief Oleksandr Sirsky at Zelensky’s request.

Ukraine has had no ambassador to Britain since Zelensky expelled the previous one, Vadim Prystaiko, in July 2023 for publicly criticizing him.

Earlier today, British Defense Minister Grant Shapps visited Kiev, as Zelensky himself announced through the X platform.

“Our primary goal is to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense and long-range capabilities, as well as meet other urgent needs for weapons and ammunition and develop joint production of weapons,” the Ukrainian president said.

The photos of the meeting released by Zelensky do not show Zaluzny.
