Islamic law in force in Iran prohibits dancing between male-female couples or all-female couples in public
Two young women were arrested in Iranafter posting a video, in which they dance to celebrate the arrival of the Persian New Year, an Iranian media reported today.
The video of the two women rocking near the Tajris Squarea busy area in northern Tehran, has gone viral on social media in recent days.
“Tehran’s prosecutor ordered the arrest of the two women who violated social norms by dancing in the Tajrish,” Tasnim news agency reported.

The two young women had disguised themselves as Haji Firuz, a fictional character dressed in red who dances and sings to announce the arrival of Nowruz, the Iranian New Year, which this year begins on March 20.

Numerous videos of women dancing in public places, particularly in the subway, have gone viral in Iran in recent months, following the protest movement that rocked the country in late 2022 following the death of Mahsa Amini, of a 22-year-old woman who was arrested by the morality police for not respecting Iran’s strict dress code.
