A massive fire broke out yesterday Sunday in warehouses of the national electricity company of Libya, in a southern suburb of the capital Tripoli, but no casualties have been reported so far.

The material warehouses of the general electricity company of Libya caught fire last night in the al-Krimiya industrial zone, about twenty kilometers south of Tripoli.

Thick plumes of black smoke were visible even after nightfall from the capital, an AFP journalist reported.

Videos uploaded to social media and broadcast by Libyan media showed firefighters trying to bring the flames under control before a powerful explosion forced them to retreat.

Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity (GNU) Abdelhamid Dbayba ordered an investigation into the cause of the fire.

Interior Minister Imad Trabelsi ordered the immediate evacuation of residents of all houses “within a radius of one kilometer” from the warehouses, he announced on Facebook.

The extent of the damage is still unknown.
