A Peruvian tour guide was killed and six French tourists were injured yesterday from lightning strike in the tourist area of ​​Cuzco, southern Peruthe local police announced today.

The lightning struck the group while they were hiking on Mount Vinicunca, also called the mountain of seven colors, which is located in the heart of the Andes, about 100 kilometers from the city of Cuzco.

In a press release, local police said the French tourists, aged between 22 and 40, were being treated at a hospital in Cuzco. They have suffered “burns and other injuries,” it added without giving further details about their health conditions.

The mountain of seven colors dominates at an altitude of 5,200 meters. The colors that compose it are the result of layers of sediment that have accumulated over a period of millions of years. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Peru along with Machu Picchu.

Since the beginning of the year, five people have been killed by lightning in Peru’s Andes regions, according to the civil protection agency.
