At least 61 people have been kidnapped by gunmen in a village in Nigeria’s northern Kaduna state, some 24 hours after gang members kidnapped nearly 300 schoolchildren, residents said Tuesday.

Gangs have been terrorizing parts of northern Nigeria for over a decade, targeting villagers, commuters, schoolchildren and students, kidnapping for ransom, and also frequently committing looting and killings.

The gunmen attacked the Buda community around midnight on Monday, shooting sporadically, residents said.

Kidnappings often take place in remote villages.

Lawal Abdullahi, who was not in the village when the raid took place, found that his wife was among the residents who were abducted by the thugs. “We are waiting for them to call to demand a ransom, as usual,” Mr. Abdullahi told the Reuters news agency by telephone.

The village is about 160 kilometers from the community of Kuriga, where the kidnapping of the students took place last week.

There was no response when Reuters tried to contact security officials in Kaduna state for comment.
