A major strike has paralyzed the Paris Metro

by

A strike has paralyzed much of Paris’s metro network, causing problems for millions of people, with workers demanding higher wage increases than those proposed by the management company.

Paris-based public transport company RATP has announced that six of its metro lines are closed, with the rest operating only partially. There are also problems with the express regional network (RER) routes.

Only two subway lines, 1 and 14, where the trains run without a driver, have not been affected by the strikes, RATP said on its website.

“We ask companies to make the most of telework”said the French Minister of Transport Jean-Baptiste Djibari on Twitter.

RATP employees said the strike, which comes at a time when unions and management are set to begin negotiations on wage increases, is due to the fact that the state-owned company has offered them insufficient increases.

RATP has announced that it is willing to increase wages by 2.7% in 2022, with the unions calling the proposal “provocative”.

Inflation in France reached 3.3% in January.
