The Israeli military has launched hundreds of airstrikes in Syria since war broke out in that country in 2011.
Israel launched airstrikes in Syria in the early hours of the morning, targeting two facilities on the outskirts of the capital Damascus, including an arms and ammunition depot, a non-governmental organization said, and one soldier was wounded in the attack, Syrian state media reported.
The Israeli military has launched hundreds of airstrikes in Syria since war broke out in that country in 2011.
Such operations have proliferated since war broke out in the Gaza Strip in October 2023 between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas. In particular, organizations close to Iran are targeted, above all the Lebanese Hezbollah, an ally of Hamas.
“Israeli missiles” targeted a Syrian army arms and ammunition depot used by Hezbollah in the Qalamoun mountain range, northeast of Damascus, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
Another infantry battalion installation in the same area was also targeted, according to the NGO, which is based in Britain and has a wide network of sources in the war-torn country. He spoke of a fire in one of the two facilities.
“The Israeli enemy carried out an air strike (…) targeting a number of points in the southern region,” the official Syrian news agency SANA reported, citing a military source, without specifying where exactly it took place.
A soldier was wounded and “material damage” was recorded, SANA added, according to which some of the Israeli missiles were shot down by anti-aircraft defenses.
In early March, Israeli shelling killed an officer of the Revolutionary Guards, an elite body of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s army, and two other people in Banias, on the Syrian shores of the Mediterranean.
On Tuesday, Israel’s military said it had hit “about 4,500” Hezbollah positions in Lebanon and Syria, including “over 1,200” from the air, after the war broke out in the Gaza Strip.
Israel’s political and military leadership rarely publicly comments on operations in Syria, but has declared that it will not allow Iran, the Jewish state’s sworn enemy, to build a bridgehead or expand its foothold on its border.
