Russians are voting today, for the third and final day, in the country’s presidential elections, with the result known in advance – the triumphant re-election of Vladimir Putin.
With the opposition wiped out and the Kremlin portraying national unity as a patriotic duty amid the conflict with Ukraine, Russians have been queuing outside polling stations since morning.
Several hours before voting closed, turnout had reached 67.54 percent, surpassing 2018 levels, according to the TASS news agency.
In 2018, participation reached 67.5%.
The highest turnout ever recorded in a presidential election in Russia in modern times was in June 1991, when it reached 74.7%.
Tomorrow morning the results
Elections are held in 11 different time zones in the largest country on the planet. The first polling stations opened in the regions of Chukotka and the Kamchatka Peninsula, in the far east, late last night (Greek time).
The last polling stations in the Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad are expected to close tonight at 20:00 (Greece time).
Then exit polls and the first results from the state institute Vtsiom will be published. The counting of votes is expected to be completed tomorrow morning.
“Noon against Putin” in many regions
Yulia Navalnaya, who has vowed despite her exile to continue her late husband’s campaign, had invited his supporters to appear at the polls at the same time today at noon (11.00 Greek time) and vote for any other candidate besides Putin .
Navalny’s aides broadcast images of protests in various parts of the country as citizens followed the dead opposition leader’s last wish.
In the Russian Far East, in Vladivostok, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Irkutsk and other Siberian cities, citizens joined the “Noon Against Putin” campaign, as Navalny’s associates showed via live stream on YouTube.
Hundreds of people were also queuing at a polling station in Yekaterinburg in the Urals.
Other opponents of Putin, such as exiled Russian businessman Mikhail Khodorkovsky, who lives in the UK, also called on citizens not to be afraid and to join this campaign.
