The United States said today that Israeli authorities should allow the head of the UN refugee agency (UNRWA) to enter the Gaza Strip after being denied on Monday.

Philippe Lazzarini had said from Cairo that he had “planned to go to Rafah”, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip, through the border crossing with Egypt but that he was “informed that he is not allowed to enter”.

He then clarified in a message on Platform X that “Israeli authorities” have “denied” him entry into Israeli-besieged Palestinian territory since the war with the Palestinian Hamas movement began.

“They should be allowed to visit the places where UNRWA intervenes, and inside Gaza, and we continue to work with the Israeli government to quickly approve all entry visas requested for UN and NGO workers,” he told Vedant Patel, deputy spokesman for the US State Department, told reporters.

“All states in the region must do whatever is necessary to enable a humanitarian response, and that certainly includes allowing free movement for workers in international organizations,” he added, without specifying whether the United States had discussed with Israel the denial of entry to Lazzarini.

The head of UNRWA, who was in Jerusalem today, said this denial of entry was “unprecedented” for “the head of the main UN agency present in Gaza”.
