Since the outbreak of war in the Gaza Strip, triggered by an attack by Hamas’ military arm in southern Israel on October 7, violence has escalated further in the West Bank.
A Palestinian was killed on Tuesday in the northern part of the occupied West Bank during an attack by Jewish settlers on his home, a local elected official said, while the Israeli army gave a completely different version, saying that its member opened fire during incidents.
Faher Bassem Bouni Jamber, 43, succumbed to his injuries at Rafindia Hospital in Nablus, a member of the medical staff at the health facility told AFP.
Earlier, the shepherd was “hit by a bullet in the heart” while he was “in front of his house” in Herbit at Tawil, near Aqraba, said Salah Bouni Jaber, the mayor of this community, about fifteen kilometers from Nablus, assuring that he was present.
The attack, he added, was carried out by “four settlers” from the nearby settlement of Gitit, three of whom were “wearing military uniforms”. They shot the man and “quickly walked away,” he added.
Asked about this incident by AFP, a spokesman for the Israeli armed forces said the army had received information about “tensions between an Israeli child and Palestinians near the Gitit dam”.
“A group of soldiers went to the spot and riots broke out with dozens of Palestinians. The soldiers acted to end the riots and shot one of the suspects,” he continued, clarifying that he was “hit.” The incident “is under investigation”, he added.
Since the outbreak of war in the Gaza Strip, triggered by an attack by Hamas’ military arm in southern Israel on October 7, violence has escalated further in the West Bank.
According to Palestinian Authority figures, more than 430 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli soldiers or Jewish settlers since then. At least 17 Israelis, soldiers and civilians, have also been killed in attacks, according to Israeli authorities.
In addition, the Israeli army reported that a 30-year-old Palestinian was “neutralized”, also yesterday, by two members of the Shin Bet (internal security and counterintelligence agency), against whom he “opened fire” near Gush Etzion, a cluster of Jewish settlements to the south of Bethlehem, in the southern part of the West Bank.
