He described it as a “reasonable” scenario the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk the possibility of Israel using starvation in Gaza as a weapon in the ongoing war.

With a BBC interview the Austrian UN official warned that if such an intention proved to exist, then it would amount to a “war crime”.

From Geneva, Mr. Turk noted that indications have emerged of a deliberate delay or withholding of humanitarian aid by Israel.

Although he condemned the attacks by Hamas on October 7, he noted that all sides must be held accountable for their actions in this war.

“All my colleagues keep telling us that there is a lot of bureaucracy. There are obstacles. There are obstacles. Israel is largely responsible,” said Mr. Turk and continued:

“This raises the question, with all the limitations we see at the moment, whether there is a reasonable claim that can be made that hunger is or can be used as a weapon of war.”

Reacting to this statement, Israeli Finance Minister Nir Barkat from Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party called it “absolute nonsense” and an “irresponsible” statement.
