The Kremlin announced today that absolute silence is required regarding possible prisoner exchange talks involving him Evan Gershkowitz (Evan Gershkovich), her publicist Wall Street Journal who was arrested in Russia a year ago on charges of espionage.

Asked when the court will consider his case or if there will be one prisoner exchangeKremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters: “We have no information about the court – it is not in our jurisdiction.”

“Regarding the exchange, we have repeatedly emphasized that there are specific contacts, but they must be done under absolute silence“, Peskov emphasized, adding that public comments hinder this process.

It is recalled that Alexei Navalny he died in prison, shortly before he was released in the prisoner exchange process.

The 32-year-old Gerskovich became the first American journalist to be arrested with charges of espionage in post-Cold War Russia when he was arrested by the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation (FSB) on March 29, 2023.

Both he, the newspaper where he works and the US government deny that he is a spy. Russia, for its part, maintains that the journalist was arrested while driving.

The FSB, successor to the Soviet KGB, claims Gershkowitz was trying to extract military secrets.

Gerskovich has already spent almost a year in the high security prison Moscow’s Lefortovo – which is closely linked to the FSB – and his detention has been extended until June 30.
