What The Wall Street Journal reports with its article entitled “Russia Doubled Imports of an Explosives Ingredient—With Western Help”
Moscow shows it is determined to continue the war in Ukraine. Russia has increased imports of nitrocellulosewhich is used, among others, for the production of gunpowder for artillery shells. Among the nitrocellulose producers supplying Russia over the past two years are also companies from the United States, Germany and Taiwan, The Wall Street Journal reported in an article titled “Russia Doubled Imports of an Explosives Ingredient—With Western Help”, where the newspaper cited commercial figures.
Imports of nitrocellulose from Russia increased by 70% in 2022, the first year of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. By mid-2023, 3,039 tonnes had been imported – almost twice as much as in 2021.
As the Wall Street Journal notes, only a few countries in the world produce nitrocellulose, because its main use is the production of munitions and it is subject to international trade restrictions. Nitrocellulose is also used for civilian purposes, but analysts believe that increasing imports are for equipment, as the Russian economy has been reoriented towards wartime military industry.
Russia produces small amounts of nitrocellulose. Since the European Union and the United States imposed sanctions against MoscowChina increased supplies of this compound to Russia. However, according to trade figures, a small company in Turkey, Noy, is responsible for almost half of Russia’s nitrocellulose imports since the war began. Through it, Russia buys nitrocellulose produced in the US, Germany and Taiwan, the newspaper said.
