Police in the German city of Munich have deployed more police forces for security during the Bundesliga match between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

The increased security presence comes after police were tipped off on Friday that images had been circulated on social media showing a target being placed on spectators outside the stadium.

“There is no specific evidence of risk”

The image was allegedly created by the terrorist group ISIS-K, an offshoot of the self-styled “Islamic State” based in Afghanistan.

The group claimed responsibility for last weekend’s deadly attack at a music venue outside Moscow.

A spokesman for the Munich police department told the German news agency dpa that they evaluated the photo on Friday night together with the regional investigation department and concluded that there was no concrete evidence of danger.

For a game of this importance, 300 to 500 police officers would normally be deployed.

“We are now increasing that number,” the police spokesman said.

Bayern-Dortmund matches are known as ‘Der Klassiker’ due to their long-standing rivalry for supremacy in German football.

Threat of terrorism at major sporting events

German Interior Minister Nancy Feiser said earlier this week that Germany would introduce temporary controls at all its borders for Euro 2024 after the terror attack in Moscow.

Even before the attack in Moscow, Germany and France agreed to deploy security personnel to boost security during the European Championships and the Paris Olympics.
