Her appeal comes after Biden said the US was “looking into” such a possibility
London, Thanasis Gavos
Julian Assange’s wife, Stella, call US President Joe Biden “to do the right thing” and drop the charges against the Wikileaks founder.
Her appeal comes after Biden said the US was “looking into” such a possibility. There was a previous request by Anthony Albanese, Prime Minister of Australia, where Mr. Assange comes from.
The 52-year-old Assange’s lawyers spoke of “encouraging” comments.
Today marks five years since his imprisonment in London, after years of immunity in the building that houses the Ecuadorian embassy in the British capital.
A request for the right of appeal by Mr. Assange against the decision to be extradited to the US is pending before the British justice system.
There he faces charges of conspiring to obtain and disclose national security information after releasing documents about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The High Court in London has ruled that the US must ensure that in the event of extradition Mr Assange’s freedom of speech will be respected, there will be no discrimination against him during his trial on the basis of his nationality and in the event of a conviction he will not face the death penalty.
THE a final verdict on leave to appeal will be announced on May 20.
As Julian Assange’s lawyers and family have said, in case it is not possible to file an appeal in Britain, they will turn to the European Court of Human Rights.
