Indonesia is often hit by landslides during the rainy season, a phenomenon exacerbated in places by deforestation.
A landslide has killed at least 19 people and left two others missing in central Indonesia’s South Kelevi province following heavy rains, emergency services said Sunday.
The bodies of the victims and two survivors were found in villages in Tana Toraja district that were hit by the landslide on Saturday, Suleiman Malia, a disaster management official in the region, told AFP.
“We count two dead (…) and at the moment we are still looking for more victims,” he said, clarifying that two people are missing, who apparently were buried when the landslide hit.
Tana Toraja has seen “heavy rains for the past week, practically non-stop,” it said. Rainfall eroded the soil in residential areas on the mountainside, causing landslides that buried houses with their residents inside, he explained.

In early March, flash floods and landslides killed at least 30 people in Sumatra. Dozens more are still missing on the island.
In December, landslides and floods hit dozens of homes and destroyed a hotel near Lake Toba, also in Sumatra, killing at least two people.
