France’s largest occupation – which housed up to 450 migrants, most of whom are in the country legally, according to the associations – is being evacuated as of this morning in the southern suburbs of Paris, 100 days before the Olympics , according to AFP journalists.

The operation prompted many homeless people who had taken shelter in the premises of an abandoned business in the Vitry-sur-Seine commune to leave before the police arrived.

About 250 police officers were mobilized for this operation, according to the Val-de-Marne prefecture.

With suitcases in hand, with all their belongings in France, and concern painted on their faces, the approximately 300 homeless people who remained there left the area shortly after 8:00 am. local time.

Some of them had been staying in these facilities for several months, unable to find private accommodation or waiting to be housed through welfare.

According to the association United Immigrants, which regularly provides them with assistance, 80% of them are legally in France.

For several months now, the Revers de la Medal collective, which brings together associations that help people living on the street in poor conditions, has been warning about the fate of the homeless, whose makeshift camps are being dismantled at an accelerated pace ahead of the Olympic Games that will hosted by the French capital from July 26 to August 11.
