“A clear violation of international law” and a “blatant violation of the sovereignty and integrity of Ukraine,” Boris Johnson described Vladimir Putin’s recognition of Donetsk and Luhansk as independent.

“This is a denunciation of the Minsk process and the Minsk agreements and I think it is a very bad omen and a very dark sign,” he added during a press conference on lifting all restrictions on the coronavirus.

Mr Johnson also said it was another sign that things were “going in the wrong direction” in Ukraine.

He promised that Britain would continue to stand by Ukraine, referring to the package of sanctions that has been prepared and the shipment of defense weapons to Ukraine.

He added that Britain would continue to think about what more it could do to support the Ukrainians and announced that there would be emergency talks with allies and partners.

“It’s definitely bad news,” said Boris Johnson, who, when asked if he believed the Russian president had decided to invade Ukraine, said he could not read his mind but hoped to back off.
