European leaders condemned Iran’s attack on Israel and decided to impose new sanctions against Tehran, European Council President Charles Michel said in his remarks after the end of the first day of the summit.

“Sanctions against Iran are a clear message we want to send,” he noted, adding that the purpose is to protect civilians, while at the same time the 27 demand the release of all hostages.

At the same time, Charles Michel pointed out that the European Council favored an “immediate ceasefire” and the distribution of more humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza.

He also stressed that it is very important to isolate Iran.

Asked if there were signs that Israel would soon retaliate, the European Council president referred to G7 and European Council statements urging all parties to show restraint.

“This is the clear message. This is really our common position,” he insisted.

For Turkey, the president of the European Council said that the EU wants to develop a stable relationship and work based on a gradual, proportional and reversible approach. He recalled the issue of Cyprus, which always remains extremely important, as he said.

In addition, Charles Michel stressed that Ukraine needs more military equipment and member states, especially those with more capabilities, realize how important it is to provide air defense systems and ammunition.
