The president of the European Council reacted to the post of Donald Trump, who asked the EU to “move” and help Kiev in the war with Russia
Its president European Council Charles Michel today contradicted the former US president’s claims Donald Trumpwho accused Europe of not helping Ukraine enough and, in fact, doing less than Washington.
“Let’s restore the truth. The numbers speak for themselves. The EU’s contribution to Ukraine: 143 billion euros ($150 billion),” Michel wrote in a post on Platform X, which was directed at Trump.
Trump, who in November’s presidential election will face him again Joe Biden, called on Thursday for Europe to “move” to support Kiev. Tomorrow Saturday the American House of Representatives is expected to vote on a package of aid (mainly military) for Ukraine, amounting to 61 billion dollars. That aid had been blocked for months by Republicans.
“How come the US has committed to giving more than 100 billion dollars to the war in Ukraine, more than Europe, when we are separated by an ocean!” Trump protested on his website, Truth Social. Without directly objecting to the new aid package, the former president said in recent days that the US should “stop giving money without hoping to get it back.”
“Everyone agrees that Ukraine’s survival and strength should be more important to Europe than to us, but they are just as important to us! Move over, Europe,” wrote Trump, who regularly accuses Europeans of not spending enough on defense.
According to the Germany-based Kiel Institute, the EU and its member states were at the beginning of the year the main backers of Kiev, having promised to support Ukraine with 144.1 billion euros. The USA follows, with 67.6 billion euros. However, the EU has so far only given €77.2 billion, because its contribution extends over the coming years.
