Elections in Libya have been announced by the caretaker Prime Minister

by

Libya’s caretaker Prime Minister Abdelhamid Debayba, who has been replaced by a newly elected parliament, reiterated on Monday that he would hand over power only to an elected government and announced that parliamentary elections would be held before the end of June.

Libya, which is already torn between two rival institutions in the east and west, has been in Tripoli since February 10 with two prime ministers after failing to hold presidential and parliamentary elections in December.

The Tobruk-based parliament in eastern Libya has elected former Interior Minister Fati Basaga as the new caretaker Prime Minister, replacing Abdelhamid Dibeba, but the latter insists he will hand over power only to an elected government.

In addition to replacing Dibbea, lawmakers voted in favor of a new roadmap, which is expected to lead to a presidential election in 14 months at the latest.

In a televised address last Monday night, Dibeba spoke out against the “hegemonic political class” and especially against parliament, whose “reckless” decision to replace him “will inevitably lead to war”.

He also announced his own political roadmap, which is expected to lead to parliamentary elections “no later than June 24”, the date on which the UN political process ends.

As part of this process, a year ago, Dbeiba was appointed caretaker Prime Minister, head of an interim government, after years of war and division, to lead the transition and hold presidential and parliamentary elections.

But ongoing disputes have led to the postponement of two elections, in which the international community has high hopes that the country will finally stabilize and foreign intervention will end.

In his speech yesterday, Dibeba assured that a Constitution will be drafted after the parliamentary elections, which will lay the legal basis for the presidential elections, the date of which has not been specified.

He assured that he will not be a candidate in the presidential elections.

Meanwhile, his rival, Prime Minister Bashaga, has until February 24 to form a government, which will have to be approved by parliament.
