Euroferry Olympia: The operation to locate the 10 missing continues

The operation to locate the missing stopped yesterday, late in the afternoon, while inside the ship there are still small fires, dense smoke and high temperatures.

On two of the ship’s decks, where EMAK men operate with oxygen and special uniforms, the carbon dioxide exceeds 500 Ppm (unit of measurement for carbon dioxide). In fact, every operation that takes place can not last more than 30 minutes while visibility is very limited.

The ship, due to the changing weather conditions in the sea area, it is not excluded to move again to a safe place, while only when the fires are completely extinguished and the air inside is better cleaned will it be led to a commercial port, in order to be thoroughly investigated by the experts.

At the place where the ship is today, there are two vessels of the Greek Navy, four tugs and a fire boat.

The fire on the ship “Euroferry Olympia” broke out on the third deck in the early hours of Friday, February 18 in the sea area northeast of Ereikousa during the execution of its planned route from Igoumenitsa to Brindisi.

The rescued amount to 280 people, passengers and crew, 10 people are reported missing, while a 58-year-old driver was found dead.
