Recognition of Donetsk and Lugansk by Russia unacceptable, says Erdogan

by

Recognition by Moscow of the self-proclaimed People’s Republics of pro-Russian rebels in eastern Ukraine is “unacceptable,” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said today.

“We consider this decision unacceptable. “We call on all parties concerned to show prudence and to comply with international law,” Erdogan said on the sidelines of his official visit to Senegal.

NATO member Turkey is considered an ally of Ukraine, having sold military drones to the country.

Erdogan had suggested mediating the escalation of the crisis between Russia and Ukraine in order to avoid a conflict, and has said he is ready to host talks between the two countries’ presidents.

In early February, he had traveled to Kiev to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelesnky and has repeatedly invited his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to meet.

Erdogan has said he has received a “positive response from Putin,” but has not set a specific date for the meeting.
