The recommendation will support Member States to strengthen their child protection systems
The European Commission yesterday issued the recommendation to develop and strengthen integrated child protection systems in the best interests of children, fulfilling its relevant commitment under the EU strategy on the rights of the child.
The recommendation will support Member States to strengthen their child protection systems. Authorities at all levels of government and civil society in all sectors must work together to protect children from all forms of violence in a coherent and systemic way.
There are 80 million children living in the EU. Violence against children continues to be a major challenge both inside and outside the EU, on many levels. Between 13% and 29% of 15-year-old students report being bullied frequently. Up to 13.7% of adult women reported experiencing sexual violence during childhood. This percentage is probably even higher. The actions and inaction of governments have a greater impact on children than on any other social group. Protecting children is both a moral and a legal imperative. It is also a strategic, long-term investment in our communities. More information is available in this newsletter.
