The close cooperation Germany-Britainespecially in the field of security, reaffirmed the chancellor Olaf Solz and prime minister Rishi Sunakannouncing earlier today the joint development of a remote-controlled howitzer for future ground military operations.

The two leaders also reiterated their commitment to support Ukraine “as long as necessary”, while, in response to a related question, Olaf Solz again ruled out sending the Taurus system, even after the US decision to provide Ukraine with a long-range system ATACMS. “Regarding the Taurus missiles, my decision will not change,” the chancellor stressed and reminded that Germany and Britain are, after the US, the most important suppliers of military equipment to Ukraine. “My decision is clear about this particular weapon system. But she is also absolutely clear about the intention to remain the biggest supporter of Ukraine in Europe, with Britain being the ones doing the most,” said Mr Soltz.

Mr. Sunak, for his part, welcomed the “new chapter” in relations with Germany, referring to the joint weapons program and, in response to a question about whether he understood Berlin’s refusal to deliver Taurus missiles to Ukraine, said that the important is that there is a great alliance, within which each one contributes what he can. “At this dangerous time for the world, Britain and Germany stand side by side to protect peace and prosperity in our countries and across Europe,” he said.

Both Mr. Sunak and Mr. Soltz underlined the need for Europe to strengthen its defense capabilities and not expect everything from the US. Referring to the release by Congress of a $61 billion package for Ukraine, the chancellor spoke of an “encouraging and necessary message” and noted that the US decision “does not absolve us here in Europe of the mission to further expand support to Ukraine so that every country to be able to defend itself against the aggressor.” In fact, addressing the European countries that have Patriot, he called on them to consider offering such systems to the Ukrainian armed forces. Germany just recently announced its intention to send a third Patriot system to Ukraine.
