A Russian journalist has been arrested in Russia for “extremism”, accused of taking part in the creation of videos for the group of late President Putin’s rival Alexei Navalny. reported the American news agency Associated Press, with which he mainly cooperated.

THE Sergey Karelin he is the second journalist to be arrested on these charges, after Konstantin Gabovwho was also arrested on Saturday and who at times worked with the Canadian branch of the Reuters news agency.

The Associated Press told AFP today that it was “deeply concerned about the detention of Russian journalist Sergei Karelin” and suggested it was “seeking additional information” about the case.

Karelin and Gabov are accused of participating in the preparation of videos for the NavalnyLIVE YouTube channel of the group of Navalny, who died in prison in February under suspicious circumstances.

His movement has been labeled “extremist” by the courts, putting his associates and supporters at risk of prosecution.

Most of the late dissident’s associates are in exile abroad, others have been sentenced to prison terms.

Russian authorities have increased their pressure on independent and foreign media in Russia in recent months, amid a wholesale crackdown on dissident voices since the start of the offensive in Ukraine.

In late March, a photojournalist, Antonina Kraftsova, who worked under the name Antonina Favorskaya, was also arrested on charges of “extremism”.

He covered the trials of Alexei Navalny very regularly for SOTAvision, one of the last media outlets to document Russia’s political repression and has been labeled a “foreign agent” by Russian authorities.

A Russian journalist from the Russian edition of Forbes, Sergey Mingazov, was arrested on April 26, accused of spreading “false information” about atrocities attributed to the Russian military in Ukraine.

Several other journalists are in custody in Russia, including the American Evan Gershkovich, who has been accused of “espionage”, a charge that he, the media he works for, his relatives and the US authorities reject.

A Russian-American journalist, Also Kurmaseva, who works for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), has also been detained since October 2023 for not registering as a “foreign agent” as requested by the authorities.
