A container ship has reportedly been targeted by missiles near the Yemeni port of Muscat, according to British maritime security firm Ambrey
A Maltese-flagged container ship was targeted by three missiles while sailing from Djibouti to the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah, British maritime security firm Ambrey announced today.
The UK Maritime Safety Office (UKMTO) said it had been informed by the Company’s Chief Security Officer of an explosion in close proximity to a merchant ship.
UKMTO added that the vessel and its crew are safe and authorities are investigating the incident.
Iran-backed Houthi fighters have repeatedly launched drones and missiles at international merchant ships in the Red Sea region since mid-November, saying they are acting in solidarity with the Palestinians against Israel’s military operations in Gaza.
Ambrey estimated that the vessel was targeted because its registered operator does business with Israel.
Ambrey and UKMTO received a report of an incident 54 nautical miles north-west of Mukha, Yemen.
The Houthi attacks in the Red Sea region have caused problems for global shipping, forcing companies to send their ships on longer and more expensive voyages around southern Africa.
