At least 25 people were killed and 13 injured when a bus plunged into a ravine in northern Peru.

The accident occurred on Sunday night when a bus, heading to Sorochuco, veered off its course on a country road and plunged into a 200-meter ravine, ending up in the waters of a river, according to Peruvian media reports.

Prosecutor Olga Bombadilla Teran told the RPP network that about 15 survivors were taken to hospitals in Cajamarca and Celentin with serious injuries.

Police director Alexander Uriarte told Canal N television that 25 passengers were killed and 13 injured, including the bus driver.

The causes of the accident remain unclear so far.
