At least five people have died and 18 others are missing due to heavy rains in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil, the local government announced on Tuesday.

The bad weather hit 77 municipalities of the state. About 100 people were rushed from their homes and another 200 are headed to shelters, according to state authorities.

The federal government will join the efforts of the state and municipalities “to overcome this difficult moment, a reflection of climate change affecting the planet,” Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said via X, after a telephone conversation with Governor Eduardo Leite.

In the coming hours, the amount of rainfall is expected to “remain high” and “all” rivers in the state have reached “levels above the alert limits”, the state government warned in its own statement.

In late March, heavy rains in southeastern Brazil killed at least 25 people in the states of Rio de Janeiro and Espirito Santo.

Southern and southeastern Brazil are being hit by a cold front followed by an extreme heat wave.
