Over 2,000 homes have been flooded – “If you live near a river, stream or on a mountainside, move away quickly”, warned the Haitian civil protection
Bad weather is expected to continue in Haiti over the weekend, the weather service of the Caribbean country warned, where heavy rains caused flooding that killed 13 people in the north and damaged thousands of homes.
“If you live near a river, stream or mountainside, move away quickly,” warned the Haitian civil protection.
Almost the entire country is at risk from a wave of bad weather, the weather service said, warning against flash floods.
Near the town of Cap Haitien, a landslide caused the collapse of houses and killed at least 12 people, the disaster management agency said last Thursday night.
Over 2,000 homes have been flooded.
Northern Haiti is characterized as the center of agricultural and livestock production in the country, but even this region has not been unaffected by the activity of organized crime: criminals trying to expand their control in the region cause damage to crops, commit looting, demand bribes from farmers and breeders…
The disaster management agency also said it had found “large losses” of farmed animals in the north, while in the central part of the country farms had suffered “disasters”.
Over the weekend, rainfall, heavy in places, is expected to continue in the north and south, the meteorological service said.
The devastation comes amid a crisis in Haiti, where the new transition council has been wracked by infighting — it named a caretaker prime minister, then revoked the appointment — as gangs have sharply escalated violence in recent months.
