London, Thanasis Gavos
UK Foreign Secretary Liz Trass said in morning interviews that the latest security information confirms that it is “extremely likely” that Russian President Putin “To carry out its plan for a full-scale invasion” in Ukraine.
He added that based on this information, it is also “extremely likely” that an attack will take place even in the Ukrainian capital Kiev.
He assessed that the Russian President “has put it stubbornly” to invade Ukrainewanting to “turn the clock back to 1990”.
Regarding the British government’s criticism of “weak” sanctions against Russian interests since the declaration of independence of Donetsk and Lugansk yesterday, Ms. Tras insisted that the sanctions against five key banks and three oligarchs with close ties to President Putin “will cause pain” in Russia.
“This is the toughest sanctions regime we have ever imposed on Russia,” he said.
He reiterated Tuesday’s statement that a full-scale invasion would escalate sanctions by Britain and the international community. “Nothing is out of the question as to who we will target,” she said when asked if the sanctions could hurt wealthy Russians who have donated to the ruling Conservative Party.
“It’s important that we keep some sanctions in the closet in the unlikely event that Russia launches a full-scale invasion,” he said, adding that Britain was doing everything possible to deter Vladimir Putin.
Ms Tras also called on the British people left in Ukraine to leave immediately.
In an article in the Times, meanwhile, the Foreign Secretary warns that Britain has a long list of individuals who are “complicit” in the actions of the Russian leadership.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Tuesday announced sanctions against five Russian banks and three Russian oligarchs as the “first installment” of sanctions, but has been criticized by the opposition, analysts and lawmakers who say the first reaction is lukewarm. An analyst with the RUSI military research institute described it as “like Britain going in exchange for slingshots”.
