In response, the group running the campaign of Democratic rival Biden accused the Republican former president of “selling out hard-working families” in exchange for “donations to his campaign from oil barons.”
Donald Trump, the US right-wing presidential candidate, promised top oil industry executives that he would reverse President Joe Biden’s environmental policies if re-elected in November, the Washington Post reported Thursday.
In response, the group running the campaign of Democratic rival Biden accused the Republican former president of “selling out hard-working families” in exchange for “donations to his campaign from oil barons.”
When contacted by AFP, Mr Trump’s campaign would neither confirm nor deny the content of the report.
“Joe Biden is controlled by environmental extremists who are trying to implement the most radical energy agenda in history and force Americans to buy electric cars they can’t afford,” a Trump campaign spokeswoman said.
In particular, Mr. Trump promised, according to the newspaper, to immediately end the Biden administration’s freeze on permits for new liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports.
He also promised to announce new competitive tenders for mining licenses in the Gulf of Mexico, as well as lifting restrictions on exploration and mining in the Arctic and Alaska.
The New York Times also reported on the Mar-a-Lago meeting underscoring Mr. Trump’s demand that oil industry executives put $1 billion into his campaign.
Among the roughly two dozen company heads and executives were representatives of Venture Global, Cheniere Energy, Chevron and Exxon, according to a list obtained by the Washington Post.
Joe Biden managed to get a huge energy transition funding plan approved in 2022. Donald Trump, for his part, doubts that climate change even exists and had withdrawn the USA from the Paris Agreement.
“Donald Trump is acting like a comic book villain, offering to liquidate the future of the planet in exchange for a $1 billion check,” was the reaction of environmental group Evergreen Action.
“Over the past four years, America has made historic progress on climate change, which has translated into job creation and cleaner air and water across the country,” he added.
Mr Biden’s team accused Mr Trump of acting as a “puppet of his biggest financiers”.
“Trump is not fighting for what is best for American families, for cheaper energy or for our climate — the only thing he cares about is winning this election,” he added.
