At least seven people were killed and 15 others injured when an entire section of a high-rise apartment complex collapsed after being hit by a Ukrainian missile in the Russian city of Belgorod, near the border with Ukraine, Russian officials said.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Defense in Moscow, the building collapsed from fragments of a Tochka-U missile launched from Ukraine and shot down by Russian air defenses.

Rescue crews immediately arrived at the scene, however, during the search for those trapped, another floor of the complex collapsed, as a result of which several members of the rescue crews were trapped in the debris of the building, according to the Russian news agency TASS.

Footage of the collapse scene posted earlier by the governor of the Russian province of the same name, Vyacheslav Gladkov, shows that at least 10 floors of the building have collapsed.

“The city and province of Belgorod are targets of massive shelling by the Ukrainian armed forces,” Gladkov said.

“As a consequence of the direct hit the apartment complex received from a projectile, the entire facade of the building from the tenth to the first floor collapsed.”

An eyewitness at the scene of the attack stated that several ambulances and fire engines have rushed to the scene.

“An entire section of the 10-story building collapsed,” the witness told Reuters on condition of anonymity. “I see enough victims. Firefighters are investigating the wreckage.”
