The first package of British humanitarian aid for Gaza Strip which will be delivered to the new temporary jetty constructed on the shores of the area departed today from the Cyprus.

According to the Foreign Office, the aid includes almost 100 tons of materials, specifically 8,400 packs of camping equipment. It is the first part of an overall aid package worth £2m of UK aid to be delivered via Cyprus, leveraging Nicosia’s maritime humanitarian corridor initiative.

These tents will be delivered inside Gaza as soon as possible.

The British Foreign Office also said that the jetty built by the US armed forces will initially allow the delivery of 90 trucks of aid cargo each day, an amount estimated to increase to 150 trucks when fully operational.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak noted that the UK is working around the clock with allies and partners to get more aid to Gaza through all possible channels. “We are leading international efforts together with the US and Cyprus to establish a maritime aid corridor,” he continued, calling the departure of his country’s first cargo from Cyprus “an important moment” in increasing the flow of humanitarian aid.

Foreign Minister Lord David Cameron added that it is necessary to pass the vital aid to the people of Gaza through all possible channels, noting the cooperation with the USA and Cyprus.

He again called for the Israeli port of Ashdod to be fully opened, for more land crossings to be opened for longer and for improved de-escalation measures.
