Gifts of life were offered to patients in need of organ transplants by a 74-year-old victim of a car accident who was hospitalized in the 2nd Intensive Care Unit of the General Hospital of Thessaloniki “G. Papanikolaou” but lost the battle.
His relatives decided to donate his organs and today his corneas and liver were successfully harvested.
The Administration of the Hospital expressed its condolences to the family of the 74-year-old while thanking its members warmly “for their decision in the most difficult moment for them to offer gifts of life to our fellow human beings”.
In addition, he thanked the staff of the 2nd Intensive Care Unit and all other departments and clinics of the hospital who cooperated for the purpose of the donation.
Specifically, the staff of the Anesthesiology Department, the Surgeries, the Radiology Laboratory, the Surgical Department of the NHS, the Anatomical Pathology Laboratory, the Bronchoscopy Laboratory, the Immunology-Histocompatibility Department, the Microbiology Laboratory, the Biochemistry Laboratory and the Hematology Laboratory collaborated in the donation process.
The surgery to receive the organs was carried out with the contribution of G.N.Th. “C. Papanicolaou” from the surgical teams of the Milano Policlinico, Italy and the Ophthalmology Clinic of the P.G.N.Th. “AHEPA”. The procedure was carried out under the general coordination of the Hellenic Transplant Organization.
