As the thriller of the helicopter crash carrying Iranian President Raisi is in full swing, expert Phaedon Karaiosifidis summarizes, speaking to Sky, the possible scenarios for what has happened.

Summarizing that it turned out that President Raisi was ultimately flying in an older American Bell 212 helicopter and that about four or five such models are used by the Iranian Air Force to transport dignitaries, Mr. Karaiosifidis spoke of a typical incident where the weather is a dominant factor.

“That is, the helicopter in these cases, because it is an aircraft with significant limitations compared to an airplane, is trapped in the weather,” he said.

Explaining what the above means, the expert described how the operator essentially loses the perception of space.

“He has his instruments, he is probably being monitored by radar, he is in contact with air traffic control but he himself, in thick fog, has no perception of what is around him”, he said characteristically adding that in these cases and as the helicopters fly in formation, this is widened precisely to avoid the risk of collision between them.

In fact, he notes that the spot from which the Iranian president’s helicopter was flying is one of the most mountainous regions of Iran.

There are high mountains so the helicopters do not always have the possibility to fly over the terrain and instead they carry out the flights within it, an extremely dangerous process.

In these cases, according to Mr. Karaiosifidis, the pilot can choose as a possible solution the flight at a very low altitude in order to have a perception of the environment, a move that can often be fatal, especially in this case where the fog in the area was intense even for those moving on the ground.

Given the poor visibility, “if the pilot had descended low in his attempt to either orient himself or find a suitable place to land, that might have proved fatal,” he stressed.

In fact, he pointed out that anyway the forced landing in such conditions is extremely difficult to carry out without external help.

The expert said that the helicopter has crashed is one of the possible scenarios considering that no one has been able to contact it several hours after the incident.

He added that the aircraft is normally equipped with radio beacons that transmit in the event of an impact.

In any case, he emphasized that the night will make the conditions of the tracking search even more difficult.
