At least 19 people were killed in Peru in two passenger van crashes hours apart, authorities said today.

Ten people were killed and 16 others injured earlier today when a passenger van collided with a pickup truck in the central Pasco region.

The previous night, a passenger van veered off its course and crashed into a cliff in the Ankas region (further west), killing nine passengers. Six injured were transported to a local hospital.

Fatal traffic accidents are frequent in Peru and are usually attributed to excessive speed, the poor condition of the road network, the absence of signaling in certain areas, as well as faulty checks by the police. According to figures from the Ministry of Transport, 3,138 people died in 2023 in road accidents in Peru.

Last week, 16 people were killed when a bus with about 40 people on board crashed into a cliff in the Ayacucho region in the north of the country.
