THE European Union announced today that it has given to Hungary a period of two months to respond to worries which creates the law that imposes prison sentences on organizations that receive foreign funds for political purposes, before the case is referred to the Court of Justice of the European Union.

In February, the European Commission launched an infringement procedure for him “protection of national sovereignty” lawvoted in December on the grounds that it violates European democratic values ​​and fundamental rights.

The Commission announced today that Budapest’s response to the notification it received in February did not alleviate Brussels’ concerns.

The Commission has now sent a reasoned opinion to Budapest, which is official request for compliance to European legislation and this gives Hungary two months to take the necessary measures.

If Hungary does not comply, the Commission may refer the case to Court of Justice of the European Union.

Hungarian law establishes a separate authority to look for and monitor the risks of foreign political interference. It can punish foreign funding of parties or organizations with up to three years in prison.

According to Viktor Orbán’s ruling party, Fidesz, the law is necessary to protect against foreign political interference.
