Mediated negotiations between Israel and Hamas aimed at reaching an agreement on the release of Israeli hostages in the Gaza Strip are expected to resume next week, an official said today.

The decision to resume the talks, said the source, who declined to be named or to state her nationality because of the sensitivity of the matter, was taken after the head of Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency met with the head of the US CIA and his prime minister. Qatar, which is a mediator.

“At the end of the meeting it was decided that negotiations will begin next week based on the new proposals under the mediators Egypt and Qatar and with active American involvement,” the source said.

Efforts to secure the release of more than 120 hostages taken during Hamas’s October 7 offensive in southern Israel as part of a ceasefire deal have so far failed.

The two sides blame each other for the impasse.

Israel has said it cannot accept Hamas’ demand for an end to the war while the Palestinians want Israel to release Palestinian prisoners.
