“America will always be a reliable ally,” said the chairman of the US Foreign Affairs Committee
The Republican chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives, Mr Michael McCallsaid today during his visit to Taipei that the military high schools held last week by the China around her Taiwan to “intimidate” it after the inauguration of its president Lai Ching-te, they showed that Beijing does not want reunification by peaceful means.
Mr McCall made the remarks, which were broadcast live by a Taiwanese television station, at the presidential palace in Taipei. He also stated that “America is and will always be a reliable ally, and no coercion or intimidation will slow down or stop the regular visits of (members of) Congress to Taiwan.”
He also promised that weapons bought by Taiwan from the US would be delivered to the island’s armed forces as soon as possible.
Although the US does not officially recognize the island’s authorities, but China does, it is Taiwan’s main supplier of military equipment and Washington leaves open, within the framework of its so-called “strategic ambiguity” policy, the possibility of defending it if attacked by the Chinese armed forces.
China considers Taiwan its province pending reunification with the mainland after the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949.
