The Moldovan parliament decided on Thursday to declare a state of emergency for 60 days, after the Russian invasion of neighboring Ukraine.
Parliament approved, as expected, the request of the government, which in turn had adopted a proposal from the Supreme Security Council.
With the declaration of the country in a state of emergency, a special regime is established for the entry and exit from the country, for the use of the national airspace, as well as for the movement of goods. If deemed necessary, a voucher may be imposed on the distribution of food, basic consumer goods and fuel, as well as a ban on mass gatherings.
Moldovan Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilica stressed in her speech to parliament before the vote that the government would use the emergency measures only if necessary. According to her, the biggest threat to Moldova at this stage is the large migration flows. However, he added, “the state of emergency will allow us to be flexible and take swift action to resolve any problems that may arise.”
At noon on Thursday, Moldova closed its airspace due to the Russian attack on Ukraine.
