The bus with the Bahia delegation was bombed on Thursday night (24) in Salvador while it was traveling near the Fonte Nova Arena.
The explosive device hit the rear windshield and side window of the vehicle. The shrapnel ended up injuring at least two players: goalkeeper Danilo Fernandes and right-back Matheus Bahia.
According to the club, the most worrying case is that of Danilo Fernandes, who was hit by shrapnel in the face and already taken to a hospital.
At least three artifacts were launched towards the vehicle, one of which exploded inside the bus.
A car that was passing alongside the team bus was also hit by a bomb.
The Bahia team was heading to the stadium to play its first match of this year’s Northeast Cup against Sampaio Corrêa (MA).
Even with the attack, the team decided to enter the field: “The group, through its dignity and professionalism, will enter the field to honor the colors of Bahia”, said coach Guto Ferreira.
The governor of Bahia, Rui Costa (PT), repudiated the attack on the players in a post on his social networks and reported having determined the immediate investigation of the episode.
“Nothing justifies the cowardly attack on the Bahia bus this Thursday night. Football is not a field of war, it is passion. I determined an immediate investigation. Players, whether from Bahia, Vitória or any other team, are professionals and deserve respect. The crime will be investigated and the perpetrators of the attack – who I prefer not to call fans – must be tried by the courts,” said Rui Costa.
